First KESS-funded PhD Award completion for USW Student

Jane Davies, based within the Faculty of Life Sciences & Education is the first at USW to achieve a PhD through the KESS funded route. Announced first in November 2009, the Knowledge Economy Skills Scholarships (KESS) programme is a ground-breaking approach to postgraduate research providing access to PhD and Masters places over the life of its Objective 1 European funded five-year programme.

New service launched to support AD Industry

The Wales Centre of Excellence for Anaerobic Digestion , part of the Sustainable Environment Research Centre based at the University of South Wales has been awarded £889,000 by the Welsh Government’s A4B project to deliver a Knowledge Transfer Centre in Advanced Anaerobic Processes and Biogas Systems.

The project builds on the success of the Centre, which has been delivering support to the anaerobic digestion industry since 2008, and the University’s long R&D track record in anaerobic processes.

£2m A4B funded Projects Launched to deliver innovative services to business

The University has been awarded over £2M of A4B grants by Welsh Government to work with businesses to develop innovative technologies.

Areas funded include Bio-gas energy generation, Bio-plastics, Hydrogen Storage solutions and Wireless & Optical Communications. Partners include Chrysler Corporation in Detroit and Waitrose as well as many small and medium sized technology companies throughout Wales and the UK.

USW Spinout company GeoVS Ltd is bought in £1m deal

Law and finance clinic opens doors to the public

The Legal and Financial Advice Clinic based in Atlantic House opened to the public on 21 October.

Part of the School of Law Accounting and Finance, the clinic will be staffed full-time by two members of the School who will supervise students in providing advice and assistance, and occasional first tier tribunal representation, to members of the public, as well as small businesses in the areas of:

• Business debt
• Employment law
• Consumer rights
• Housing rights
• Discrimination
• Immigration and asylum advice and a family mediation service will follow in September 2014.

Student volunteer applications have exceeded all expectations, reaching 54 to date. One of the first cases students will be working on is a challenge to the spare room subsidy (also referred to as the bedroom tax).

Located within the Cardiff Enterprise Zone the Clinic aims to work closely with the legal and third sectors to gain insights into the training needs of the sector and to assist in the development of legal and financial services in Wales.

There will be an official launch event for the Clinic on November 13th.
